A dash of crochet on the wall.πŸ–€πŸ€

Inspired by grandma doilies, built on trifted yarn.

I wanted to add some handmade peaces above the bed and I kept thinking about those gradma doilies and how people hang them as wall art. I didn’t have any doilies on hand, so I made my own crochet pieces. If you want to use vintage pieces instead, check Vintage Crochet Doilies on Embroidery Hoops Collage for mounting steps.

I used bambu embroidery hoops in mixed sizes, six in total. The biggest was about 14", the smallest about 4". I split the hoops and used the outer rings and inner rings as separate frames, so one hoop made two crochet circles. Heads up: inner rings are flimsier and want to warp under tension; support the circle as you tighten and go slow. You can keep each hoop intact if you prefer, you’ll just need more hoops. I used my own stash, but mixed-size hoop sets are easy to find at Amazon.ca, Michaels Canada, or any craft shop.

  • The black, cream, and white yarn used was thrifted from Value Village. It was my favorite kind: mystery skeins with no labels.πŸ˜…I also mixed in scraps from other past projects. Most of it was fine or light weight worked with 3–4 mm hooks.
  • The buttons at the center of the crochet designs were random finds from a Dollarama black-and-white theme button bag. It was perfect because the idea was for each of them to be unique (so no repetitions!).

  • For a more personal touch, I cross-stitched our initials in small 4" hoops (used the entire hoop for this to be able to fix the fabric).
  • The letter pattern came from a free chart from LoveCrafts.
  • The fabric is 14-count Aida, and the thread is DMC 310 (black). I stitched with six strands instead of two for extra pop.
